What Should You Wear for Professional Headshots? A Photographer's Guide

A professional headshot is often the first impression people have of you. Whether it's for LinkedIn, your company website, social media, a CV or your own business, choosing the right clothing can make a real difference to the final photographs.

As a professional portrait and headshot photographer based in Malvern, Worcestershire, one of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"What should I wear?"

The good news is that you don't need a completely new wardrobe. A few simple choices can help you look confident, approachable and professional.

Bring Two Different Tops

One of my biggest recommendations is to bring both a light-coloured top and a dark-coloured top.

Different colours work better against different backgrounds, and having two options gives us much more flexibility during your session. It also creates variety, giving you a selection of images with different looks from the same appointment.

Even a simple change of jacket or shirt can create a completely different style.

Keep Your Clothing Simple

Simple, timeless clothing nearly always photographs better than busy patterns.

Solid colours help keep the attention on your face, which is exactly where it should be.

If possible, avoid:

• Large logos

• Bold graphics

• Busy patterns

• Bright fluorescent colours

• Clothing with lots of writing

Classic colours such as navy, black, grey, white, cream and muted blues generally work very well.

Avoid Thin Stripes

One tip that surprises many people is to avoid clothing with fine stripes.

Thin stripes and tight patterns can create distracting effects on camera and may draw attention away from your face. Plain fabrics almost always produce cleaner, more professional-looking portraits.

Wear Jewellery You Feel Comfortable In

Jewellery can add personality to your portraits, but keeping it simple usually works best.

A favourite necklace, earrings or watch can add a polished finishing touch without becoming the focus of the photograph.

If you normally wear jewellery every day, wear it for your session—it helps your portraits look natural and authentic.

Bring Your Glasses

If you normally wear glasses, bring them.

Your headshot should represent how people usually see you. Modern photographic lighting allows reflections to be controlled in most situations, so don't feel you need to leave them at home.

If you're unsure, we can photograph both with and without your glasses so you have plenty of options.

Choose Clothes That Fit Well

Well-fitting clothes always photograph better than clothing that's too loose or too tight.

Before your session, it's worth checking that your chosen outfit is clean and freshly pressed, as small creases can become more noticeable in high-resolution photographs.

A solicitor, accountant or company director may choose a jacket or suit, while someone working in the creative industries may prefer a more relaxed style.

The most important thing is that your clothing reflects both your personality and your profession.

There's no need for anything dramatically different.

Aim to look like the best version of yourself.

If you normally wear makeup, keep it natural. If you're having a haircut, try to have it a few days before your appointment rather than on the same day.

Relax – You Don't Need to Be Photogenic

Many people tell me they're uncomfortable in front of the camera or say they "don't photograph well."

The truth is that very few of my clients are professional models.

My job is to help you relax, guide you into natural poses and expressions, and create photographs that feel confident, approachable and genuine.

Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the experience is—and by the results.

Final Checklist

Before you leave home, I recommend bringing:
